Prevention
Herbs with anti-viral effect that clear toxin:
- Astragalus - contraindicated in autoimmune disease or when taking immune depressants
- Atractylodes
- Saposhnikoviae
- Dryopteridis
- Nicer japonica
- Orange peel
- Pei lan (Herba eupatorii) - do not use for pre-existing liver conditions

Early Phase
Wind Cold Invading Exterior
Symptoms: Onset of fever (mostly low grade), aversion to cold, chills, headache, ticklish throat, soreness of muscles or limbs, sweats.
Exam: Lung CT negative. Tongue pale, coating white and thin, floating pulse.
Treatment: Expel Wind, release the exterior, clear heat, detoxify.
Formulas: Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) or Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Kudzu Decoction). Add Isatis root if heat present.
Toxic Heat Attacking Lung
Symptoms: Fever, aversion to cold, sore and dry throat, dry cough with scanty sputum, sore muscles, weakness, headache.
Exam: CT scan reveals ground glass opacity (GGO) in both lungs. Red tongue tip and sides, thin white or yellow coating, floating and rapid pulse.
Treatment: Expel Wind, release exterior, clear heat, detoxify.
Formulas: Yin Qiao San (Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder) with Qing Wen Bai Du San modified.
Damp Cold in Lung
Symptoms: Aversion to cold or absence of fever, dry cough, dry throat, fatigue, weakness, chest stuffiness, epigastric distention, nausea, diarrhea.
Exam: Pale tongue, white greasy coating, slippery pulse.
Treatment: Expel Wind, release exterior, dispel damp cold.
Acupuncture points: LI 4, LR 3, ST36, CV8
Pneumonia Phase
Shaoyang Syndrome with Damp
Symptoms: Fever more pronounced in afternoon, alternating chills with fever, cough, bitter taste in mouth, dry mouth, chest stuffiness, irritability, nausea or vomiting, no appetite, weakness.
Exam: Multiple scattered ground glass opacity visible on CT. Slightly red tongue, thick and greasy coating, slippery rapid pulse.
Treatment: Harmonize Shaoyang syndrome, clear damp heat.
Formulas: Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum) with San Ren Tang (Three Nut Decoction) or Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan.
Damp Heat Afflicting Lung
Symptoms: Low grade fever or absence of fever, dry cough, scanty sputum, dry sore throat, fatigue, poor appetite, chest stuffiness, nausea/vomiting, loose stool.
Treatment: Transform dampness, detoxify, disperse lungs and expel pathogens.
Formulas: Ma Xing Yi Gan Tang with Xiao Xian Xiong Tang and Cao Guo Zhi Mu Tang.
Toxic Stagnation Obstructing Lung
Symptoms: Cough, stifling sensation, stuffiness in chest, asthma and wheezing worse with exertion, accelerated respiration, thirst, irritability.
Treatment: Detoxify, arrest wheezing, transform and open collaterals.
Formulas: Bai Hu Jia Ren Shen Tang (White Tiger Plus Ginseng Decoction) with Si Tu Tang.
Recovery Phase
After hospital discharge, address inflammation from virus and medications. Chi deficiency and spleen/stomach organ damage common.
Symptoms: Absence of fever, dry cough, chest stuffiness, shortness of breath especially on exertion, dry mouth, weakness.
Treatment: Tonify Qi, nourish Yin, tonify lung, open collaterals.
Formula: Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang (Glehnia and Ophiopogonis Decoction)
Acupuncture: GV 14, BL17, BL 13, ST 36, LU6 - 15 minutes once daily.
